Caught off gaurd

February 09, 2012

Sometimes there are moments and things in your life that you expect to happen. When they do happen, even though you are expecting them to, it can still catch you off guard.  Even when you are sitting there waiting to feel them move with your hand on her stomach, it still takes your breath away when it happens for the first time.

Kristy and I were visiting my Mom for dinner talking about what it was like for her when she was pregnant with me and after dinner Kristy comes nonchalantly around the table and takes my hand and places it on her belly. “They liked the dinner; they’re moving around lots.” She said to me. “You might be able to feel them.” We go on talking about the x-rays that were taken when my Mom went through labor with me and the different stories we had heard from different mothers in our lives… and I felt a bump… right in the middle of my palm.

I don’t get shocked like that very often and it is really hard to describe the feeling of that moment. “Yikes, they don’t take any x-rays of pregnant women…oh…” I said, cutting myself off in mid-sentence and whipping my head around to look at Kristy. She had this grin on her face, “You felt that?” she asked. Well, I can honestly say, I’ve never felt something so wonderful in my life. My eyes welled up with tears and emotion and are doing so right now remembering that moment. I looked down at my hand still cradling her stomach and felt another little flutter of movement. “You feel that one?” Kristy asked beaming at my shocked expression. “wow” Is all I could whisper while trying to keep my composure and not let the tears spill down my face.

That’s all I felt was those two movements; one hard, strong push and another soft, light flutter. Both of them right in the center of my palm. The baby moved down so that I wasn’t able to feel the movement any more, but it was enough. I’m so happy. I can’t imagine what it feels like for Kristy. She sent me a text when it happened to her for the first time and I was super envious.

I don’t think I will ever get tired of feeling them move around and kick about. I can’t wait to meet them!!
